Six Sick Sisters!
September 17, 2008
Thumbs Up: The furious storm of sound known as Racebannon visited our fair city Sunday night, smashing all present with a smattering of Acid or Blood and their forthcoming Six Sick Sisters‘ records. As usual, this Indiana quartet melted brains in the audience with an extremely high dose of pummel, punch and riffs. Unlike many active heavy bands, Racebannon shoot for the jugular with precision and force - rather than speed and flash. It was enough to leave me reeling in delight, happy just to see one more show from these unlikely Hoosiers. Buy the new record, out now on Southern Records.

Queso & Will Sheff
Thumbs Up: Okkervil River’s latest, the Stand Ins. As a consummate fan of the Locust and all things fiery, one may find my affinity for Okkervil a bit odd. Truth is, I’m a lover of genuine art and the genius behind it. Will Sheff is a one-of-a-kind among a pantheon of wannabes. If you can’t enjoy the Stand Ins for it’s lyrical wit, melodic teasing or dramatic resilience, then, well…screw you.
Bonus: the cool YouTube channel devoted to the Stand Ins.
Drumized!

DJ Scotch Egg and Chadly con Queso
Thumbs UP: Drumized, the full length from 8-bit/Gameboy guru, DJ Scotch Egg. If you haven’t heard this happy hardcore, DIY punk rock, yr missing out. It will sizzle yr skizzle. Out now on the ever classy Load Records.
Beer Buddies!

Andrew Duplantis and Chadly con Queso
Thumbs Up: Friends like Andrew. Sure, this guy can play him some bass (currently with Tia Carrera and Son Volt, previously with Bob Mould, Meat Puppets, Alejandro Escovedo, Jon Dee Graham, etc, etc, etc,) but he is also a fine friend. Cheers, Andrew!
A Mile High!
August 25, 2008

"I See What You Mean" bear in Denver, outside the Convention Center
Thumbs UP: Denver. Hannah and I just spent four nights in the Mile High City, enjoying almost everything about it. Sure, we had sub-par service at above-average restaurants and some complaints about the smell of feces on the public transit, but this city emphatically gets my thumbs up. For example, the current Mayor John Hickenlooper seems like a decent human being. He started the Wynkoop Brewery (the city’s first brewpub) in the late 80s and seems to be partly responsible for LoDo’s current laid-back style, which I very much appreciate.
Red Rocks, rocks!
August 24, 2008

Thumbs Up: Hannah and I were lucky enough to visit Colorado’s historic Red Rocks venue this past Thursday to see My Morning Jacket absolutely kill. I’d seen this band a few times before and fully believe “some” of the hype surrounding their live performances. While MMJ aren’t even close to my favorite band, they do command the stage in a way that any respectable music fan must appreciate, if not, enjoy. In addition to their fantastically arranged rock anthems there was magic (and cannabis smoke!) in the air for this show…I was blown away. Amen.
